Application Process
Positions
One position is available on a competitive basis each year in the Aerospace Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
Eligibility
Aerospace medicine specialists are often employed in high-stakes and potentially remote operational aviation or space flight settings. Whether civilian or military, the Aerospace Medicine Fellowship is expected and understood to represent a logical extension and progression of substantive and autonomous experiences in aviation and/or medical care.
These experiences can include:
- Personal or professional piloting
- Air traffic control
- Employment with airlines
- Ground support operations
- Aeromedical evacuation
- Military duty
- Published aviation research
- Significant involvement in a national aeromedical organization
- Prior coursework or rotations in aerospace medicine
- Prior work with space agencies or commercial space companies, aeronautical, or related engineering
- Post-training clinical experience at an attending or similarly autonomous level
The fellowship is not intended as a first exposure to aerospace medicine or aerospace in general. Our ideal candidate would have a lifelong interest in the field of aerospace medicine. The right candidate should be able to integrate prior aerospace involvement with our training that complements the previous experience.
Qualifications
To apply to the Aerospace Medicine Fellowship, you must:
- Have completed an M.D. or D.O. program
- Have completed an American Board of Medical Specialties-accredited residency of at least three years duration
- Be board-certified or board-eligible in an ABMS-recognized clinical specialty
- Have satisfied the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education application requirements
- Be committed to aerospace medicine, including participation in flying, and to be capable of physiologic exposure training including hypobaric and hyperbaric training, crew/passenger safety training, and other supervised physiologic training activities
While certain specialties lend themselves directly to aeromedical practice, we will consider any specialty from the standpoint of logical career development that incorporates the training to date with a future in aerospace. We do not encourage applications that represent a substantial break in a career path or whose skill sets do not transfer readily and obviously to aeromedical operations.
