Application Process

Positions

Mayo Clinic offers two Clinical Microbiology Postgraduate Fellowships: a Ph.D. (CPEP) fellowship and an M.D. (ACGME) fellowship.

  • Ph.D. (CPEP) fellowship. The next available position (one) for candidates interested in the CPEP program will begin July 1, 2025. Application and supporting documentation must be submitted by Sept. 1, 2024.
  • M.D. (ACGME) fellowship. The next available position (one) for candidates interested in the ACGME program will begin July 1, 2026. Application and supporting documentation must be submitted by Aug. 15, 2024. Note: We interview two years in advance for the ACGME program in order to align with other ACGME medical microbiology fellowships. 

Qualifications

Clinical Microbiology CPEP Postgraduate Fellowship

The CPEP program is open to postdoctoral-level candidates. While this program generally accepts individuals with a Ph.D., individuals with an M.D., Sc.D., D.O., or Dr. P.H. are also eligible and welcome to apply if they don't qualify for the ACGME program. Doctorates of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (DCLS) and Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) are not acceptable for admission to a CPEP-accredited program, however, a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences may be accepted upon review by the program director.

Clinical Microbiology ACGME Postgraduate Fellowship

To apply for the ACGME program, you must be a physician who has completed one of the following:

  • A residency in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Certification in anatomic pathology or clinical pathology
  • An ACGME-accredited residency program in a primary medical specialty, such as internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, or surgery.
  • An ACGME-accredited fellowship in infectious diseases

How to apply

To apply to the Clinical Microbiology Ph.D. (CPEP) Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, you will first have to apply through the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) CPEP clinical fellowship application website. After completion of the ASM application, candidates will receive an email request to apply through Mayo Clinic's application site. See below for more information on how to apply to the fellowship through Mayo Clinic's application site. Note: The application on Mayo Clinic's application site must be completed for candidates to be considered for the Ph.D. (CPEP) Fellowship.

Complete the following steps to apply for the ACGME and CPEP fellowship programs through Mayo Clinic's application website:

  1. Create an account to begin the online Application for Admission
  2. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education programs must include these application materials
  3. After submission, view the required Supplemental Items and Documents
    • Upload each required item in the Supplemental Items section (if applicable)
    • Complete the Recommendation Request section (if applicable)

In addition to the standard application materials required by Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, this program requires:

  • A letter of recommendation from your current residency program director (ACGME program) and thesis advisor/supervisor (CPEP program), for a total of three letters of recommendation. These must be completed in the Recommendation Request section. The recommenders will receive an email with a link to upload a letter.

Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty.

Interviews are conducted in October for the CPEP program and September for the ACGME program.
