Mayo Clinic's Dermatopathology Fellowship program is an ACGME-accredited, one-year experience that trains two fellows per year. The program is based in the Department of Dermatology, and there is extensive collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. 

In this collaborative setting, fellows learn with a team of experts composed of over 10 dermatopathology faculty as well as experts in soft tissue pathology, microbiology, molecular genetics, and hematopathology (among other subspecialty pathology areas).  

Fellows with background training in dermatology complete four full months of dermatopathology sign-out and eight months divided between additional dermatopathology training and building knowledge in related areas of anatomic pathology. 

In our high-volume internal wet tissue practice as well as a large consultative practice, there is ample exposure to a wide range of inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. 

Fellows are fully incorporated into and participate in departmental conferences and have excellent facilities with individual workspace, high-quality microscopes, and access to a digital slide scanner.

Mayo Clinic's Medical Dermatology Fellowship program is a one-year experience that trains one fellow per year. The program is based in the Department of Dermatology, with opportunities to participate in subspecialty clinics.

The ideal participant is someone at the beginning of a career in academic medical dermatology. Applicants must have completed a dermatology residency by the fellowship start date.

Fellows will be supported to develop in-depth knowledge and abilities in early identification, clinical diagnosis, pathophysiology, and pathology of complex medical dermatology cases. The program provides a sufficient volume and variety of surgical cases for the fellow to acquire the experience of a subspecialist in complex medical dermatology.

Fellows are fully incorporated into and participate in departmental conferences and programs.

The Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship is a one-year program, currently accepting three fellows per year. The fellows are expected to participate in and finalize at least one substantial research project during the year. 

The surgical unit consists of 17 functional operating suites and four, four-headed microscope read-out stations. 

There are currently seven core faculty members/surgeons:

The year is heavily focused on cutaneous oncology with over 7,500 Mohs micrographic surgery cases per year. 

As part of the fellowship, a traditional curriculum focuses on the general aspects of micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology. 

There is also a leadership curriculum that focuses on self-actualization with six formal didactics and six books that are read throughout the year. 

In addition, a cadaver curriculum exists where the fellows spend time in the cadaver lab focusing on flaps and peri-ocular anatomy, a histology curriculum where the art of cutting tissue/frozen sections is mastered, and a collaborative curriculum where fellows from multiple other surgical subspecialties teach the micrographic surgery fellows informal didactics pertinent to what is important to know from a skin cancer collaborative standpoint.   

Mayo Clinic's Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship program is a one-year fellowship program that currently accepts one fellow per year.

The fellowship has a robust clinical experience where fellows enjoy a high level of autonomy while also having appropriate supervision from three board-certified pediatric dermatologists. The fellow is integrally involved in teaching both pediatric and dermatology residents in clinical and didactic settings and is fully incorporated into departmental conferences. 

Dedicated time is set aside weekly for research, and the fellow has the opportunity to participate in one or more research projects throughout the fellowship year.  

Presentation and travel are encouraged and supported. 

Fellows participate in the twice-monthly interdisciplinary Vascular Malformations Clinic, which is housed in the Gonda Vascular Center, and participate in the weekly Genetic Dermatology Clinic with a faculty who is board-certified in medical genetics, dermatology, and pediatric dermatology. 

There is one month of dedicated elective time during the year which can be tailored to the fellow’s interests.

Through these and other clinical and research avenues, fellows have the opportunity to learn from a team of multidisciplinary experts. 

This fellowship at Mayo Clinic may be of interest to future applicants who seek research experience prior to applying to a dermatology program. Some Mayo residents have pursued this fellowship before matching to our program.

The Dr. Smith H. and Lucille Gibson Research Fellowship in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is a unique training opportunity.

The fellowship consists of a one-year program of support for a fellow involved in any aspect of clinical, translational, or basic research within the department, as it relates to dermatologic disease or sciences. One fellowship is supported annually within the department.
