I feel extremely fortunate to be doing my radiology training at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Every day in the reading room I get the opportunity to learn radiology from attendings who are national and international experts in their respective fields and who are driving the field forward. The high faculty-to-trainee ratio makes personalized, one-on-one teaching the norm rather than the exception. In addition to a rich complexity of diagnostic cases, we also get strong training in a full variety of procedures including high-end vascular IR, US-guided biopsies, US/fluoro-guided joint aspirations/injections, and MRI-guided breast biopsies, among many others. This program leaves residents feeling very well equipped to practice radiology in any setting, whether it be highly specialized academics or private practice.

In addition, Phoenix/Scottsdale is a fantastic place to live and has something for everyone from a diverse food scene, to professional sports, any type of concert, and limitless outdoor activities such as hiking, golf, and tennis. It's also easy to take day trips to beautiful Sedona and Flagstaff. This has been such a great place to live and train that I hope to stay in the area post-graduation!

Although I spent my entire life on the East Coast, I decided to move cross country to train at Mayo Clinic given its reputation for exceptional training. I could not be happier with my decision. The faculty, renowned nationally and internationally in their fields, are dedicated to fostering the professional growth of residents and are genuinely invested in our success. The high faculty-to-trainee ratio and the unique complexity of cases provide a comprehensive training experience, enhancing our skills in both interpreting studies and performing procedures. The residents foster a supportive community that makes each day enjoyable and fun. Initially, I planned to return to the East Coast after my training, but my years in Phoenix/Scottsdale were filled with new friendships and a love for the city. They have convinced me that this is now home.

The radiology program at Mayo Clinic Arizona offers ample opportunities to work directly with and learn from a host of faculty members who are well-known experts in their respective fields. We have the opportunity to care for a variety of patients from several busy referral services including transplant surgery and oncology. Additionally, our program offers early and frequent exposure to a variety of image-guided procedures — including lumbar punctures, ultrasound- and CT-guided biopsies, joint injections and aspirations, among others — which gives us the opportunity to see patients directly and provide diagnostic and therapeutic services.

The decision to leave Kansas and make the move to Phoenix was not an easy one but was unquestionably one of the best decisions of my life. Many of the faculty are well known across the country with extensive networking at many well-known institutions which is extremely beneficial for obtaining future fellowships and jobs.

Whether you have an interest in research, education, or plan to join a private practice, you will have a comprehensive experience and be fully prepared. Research endeavors are fully supported, and I have attended 12 conferences fully funded by Mayo Clinic in desirable locations within the continental U.S.

Overall, you will be hard pressed to find another program that provides a greater breadth of opportunities, resources, and case complexity than that provided here at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a professional environment where residents are supported and regarded not only as trainees but also as colleagues. As a smaller-sized residency within an actively expanding hospital system, residents can form strong relationships early on with departmental faculty who are invested in our growth as radiologists. By completing my transitional year here at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, I was also able to work within diverse array of medical and surgical subspecialties. The opportunity to gain familiarity with many staff and systems here was valuable as an incoming radiology resident, especially knowing that I will be interfacing frequently with these same people throughout my training.

Destination: Breast Imaging Fellowship, University of Washington, WA

I could not speak more highly about my experience at Mayo Clinic in Arizona! This program combines high-quality education with a culture that genuinely supports wellness and family. Every day I learned from subspecialty-trained radiologists, some of whom are world-renowned in their field. There is no replacement for learning from the people who authored the studies and textbook chapters. As a resident with four children, including twins born at the beginning of my R1 year, I experienced the supportive learning environment throughout my time at Mayo Clinic. Before I had even started the program, leadership was working with me to create a generous parental leave plan. I chose to breastfeed and pumped for a full year, something that would not have been possible without the program’s encouragement and logistical help. While being a physician mom is a huge challenge, being surrounded by co-residents and attendings who cared about my success in all aspects of my life made it all possible. I am incredibly grateful to have trained in a program that not only provides outstanding academic development, but also values residents as whole people.

The support of our staff, the program director, and Mayo Clinic provided the means to pursue opportunities I would not otherwise have had access to. They went above and beyond to allow me to run for national leadership positions and supported my desire to be a part of the admissions committee for Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Science. Additionally, the staff was always available to offer advice when I needed it. I have no doubt that everyone at Mayo Clinic did everything they could to help me achieve my career goals.

Destination: Abdominal Imaging and Intervention Fellowship, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI

When applying to radiology residencies, I knew that a smaller program would be the best fit for me. With four residents per year, Mayo Clinic in Arizona provided the one-on-one learning and small group environment I was looking for in a training program. This program had the benefits of having access to all of the incredible resources at Mayo Clinic, including world-renowned faculty, complex cases, as well as generous support of resident research and participation in national conferences. For me, it was the perfect balance and ideal place for my radiology education.
