Overview

The four-year Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, provides dynamic clinical training. Faculty members are passionate about teaching and recognized for educational excellence. Residents learn radiology working alongside outstanding clinicians, allied health staff, and management professionals.

The program also provides extensive educational resources and unique training opportunities. These experiences prepare you for a career in academic radiology or private practice.

Special features of the program include:

Extensive opportunities include the Clinical Educator Track for those considering a career in academic radiology, Leadership Academy, Quality Academy and Committee, innumerable research opportunities as well as elective rotations at international destinations. An emphasis on education that ensures outstanding teaching and the broadest possible patient care experience during residency.
A specially designed curriculum and thorough conference schedule to ensure that you are more than sufficiently prepared for board examinations.
Ample elective time is allowed in the fourth year of training to pursue specific clinical and research interests.
The program offers a Nuclear Medicine Pathway for those interested in obtaining specialized nuclear medicine certification.
Up to two individuals in each class can opt to complete their interventional radiology training at Mayo Clinic's Arizona campus. The program offers Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) during the R-4 year. The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency will prioritize internal candidates for advanced placement into the program. This allows additional interventional radiology certification after completing the Diagnostic Radiology Residency, with an additional training year.

After completing the program, you will become a highly qualified radiologist prepared for multiple career paths. Graduates are ready for subspecialty fellowships, private practice, or academic practice.

Mayo Clinic requires completion of a clinical year before beginning its four-year Diagnostic Radiology Residency. This requirement aligns with board eligibility standards from the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The program gives applicants full flexibility in choosing the location and focus of that clinical year.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Diagnostic Radiology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This residency also has been designated by the RRC as qualified to offer Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) training.

Certification

You are required to pass your diagnostic radiology core exam in your third year of training. As a residency graduate, you are then eligible to take the diagnostic radiology certifying exam offered by the American Board of Radiology after completion of your training.

Program history

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency in Arizona began in 2014 with four residents and expanded to six in 2022. The Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education approved the program to admit 8 residents annually by 2027.
