Emergency Communications

An emergency communications officer answers calls at the computer

Emergency communications center (ECC)

Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service operates an emergency communications center that is a secondary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) that provides 24-hour dispatching for basic life support, advanced life support, and critical care transportation through multiple modes of transport. Additionally, the ECC provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) services including pre-arrival instructions for the Rochester region, as well as several other areas of the state. The center handles around 200 service calls a day.

Additionally, the ECC coordinates communication between prehospital agencies and the emergency department. The EMS fellow will spend time in the ECC to understand the process, as well as its challenges and limitations.

The EMS fellow is also encouraged to spend time at the Rochester-Olmsted Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), which provides dispatch services to the Rochester Police Department, the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, Rochester Fire Department, and many rural EMS and fire responders. Dedicated time spent with the Rochester-Olmsted PSAP allows the EMS fellow to observe the integrated systems process from 911 call to coordinated dispatch of resource tailored to each specific call. The dispatch center receives nearly 60,000 911 calls and more than 130,000 administrative calls annually, both of which are answered 24/7.
