About the department

The Department of Emergency Medicine is built on a strong foundation of excellence in patient care, education, and innovation. This dedication is recognized globally and extends across the entire care team. Our diverse faculty brings a vast amount of expertise and specialized training, including multiple fellowship-trained faculty and experts in the fields of medical education, administration, quality improvement, sports medicine, critical care medicine, toxicology, simulation, ultrasound, health advocacy, EMS, and wilderness medicine. Our faculty are recognized locally, nationally, and globally for their achievements, and are actively involved with national committees and professional organizations. 

Our emergency medicine residency program provides an exceptional learning environment that blends hands-on clinical training with a strong foundation in education, research, and leadership development. Our program accepts five residents per cohort in a four-year residency, supporting 20 residents in total. This moderate class size, paired with expert clinical faculty, allows for highly individualized training opportunities and a more personalized residency experience, while still providing a robust resident community and peer support environment.

About the faculty

Faculty within the Department of Emergency Medicine are committed to excellence in patient care, education, and mentorship. Our faculty bring diverse expertise, with specialized training and practice in areas such as toxicology, research, medical education, simulation, ultrasound, administration, quality improvement, global health, EMS, race medicine, sports medicine, large-event medicine, and tactical medicine/SWAT operations. This broad range of expertise provides residents with valuable exposure to multiple emergency medicine subspecialties, ensuring well-rounded, comprehensive clinical education and mentorship. We are committed to delivering excellent clinical training in a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Our faculty are nationally recognized leaders in their fields, with leadership roles in national and international professional organizations, and significant contributions to advancing emergency medicine education and innovation. Above all, our faculty are dedicated mentors who provide personalized guidance to residents, supporting their growth in clinical practice, academic pursuits, and personal well-being. This commitment helps position our graduates not only for competent clinical practice but also for success in fellowship training, clinical medicine, and/or leadership roles in emergency medicine.

Meet the program leadership

Lauren Querin, M.D.,M.Ed.

Lauren Querin, M.D., M.Ed.

Residency Program Director

Dr. Querin has specialized expertise in education, having completed a fellowship in medical education with a focus on graduate medical education. She holds a strong interest in competency-based training, mentorship, and fostering trainee resilience, career longevity, and professional development. Dr. Querin values meaningful connection, active engagement, and high-quality feedback. She is particularly passionate about individualizing training to align with each resident’s goals and strengths. She has held multiple mentorship and leadership roles in both graduate and undergraduate medical education, as well as on the national level with active involvement on educational committees and organizations.

Outside of work, Dr. Querin stays busy with her husband (also an ED doc!), her two kids, and two dogs. She enjoys running (slowly) and short triathlons, as well as exploring new places with staycations and quick trips.

Fun fact: Dr. Querin, standing at 5’2”, is the tallest female in her extended family.

Wayne Martini Jr., M.D.

Wayne Martini Jr., M.D.

Associate Program Director

Dr. Martini has interests in emergency medicine research, medical education, and health care analytics. He has authored multiple publications and enjoys working with medical students and residents from an education and research perspective. He is actively involved in the Arizona chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and has received grant funding for his work. In his personal time, he enjoys playing with his kids, hiking, and preparing for his next D&D adventure.

Fun fact: With a preschooler, toddler, and an infant at home, a real chunk of Dr. Martini’s week is spent as a human jungle gym and full-time bedtime-story narrator.

Cody Petrie, M.D.

Cody Petrie, M.D.

Associate Program Director

Dr. Petrie is a dedicated emergency medicine physician with fellowship training and certification in primary care sports medicine. He is passionate about medical education and advancing evidence-based practices in emergency medicine. In addition to his work in the emergency department, Dr. Petrie serves as a team physician for Arizona State University and as a track physician for Phoenix Raceway. Outside of his professional roles, Dr. Petrie enjoys staying active with his family, exploring Arizona’s hiking trails, boating, and making the most of the southwest sunshine.

Fun fact: Dr. Petrie enjoys overpriced coffee, vintage cars, and overanalyzing everyday purchases far beyond what most would consider reasonable.

Jessica Komara, D.O.

Jessica Komara, D.O.

Associate Program Director

Dr. Komara has an interest in medical education and quality improvement.  Dr. Komara is a member of the Emergency Medicine Quality Committee.  In her personal time, she enjoys spending time with her family, and she is passionate about nutrition and fitness. 

Fun fact: Dr. Komara could eat Mexican food every single day.

Patrick Kishi, M.D.

Patrick Kishi, M.D.

Ultrasound Director

Dr. Kishi is an emergency medicine physician with a strong interest in point-of-care ultrasound. He completed a fellowship in emergency medicine ultrasound and holds a Focused Practice Designation in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound. Dr. Kishi has served as course director and faculty instructor in multiple national and international conferences. Outside of medicine, he enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending time with family.

Fun fact: Dr. Kishi’s nickname in residency was “Hollywood.”

Douglas Rappaport, M.D.

Douglas Rappaport, M.D.

Associate Chair for Education, Assistant Dean of Career Advising, Co-Clerkship Director

Dr. Rappaport is an emergency medicine physician, medical educator, and assistant dean of career advising in the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He also serves as the associate chair for education for the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the clerkship director for Emergency Medicine in Arizona.

Dr. Rappaport’s professional and research interests include medical education, global health, global emergency medicine, and emergency department operations.

Dr. Rappaport has been recognized with multiple teaching awards including the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Clinical Teacher of the Year 2022-2024, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Dean’s Distinguished Educator List 2024, SAEM Clerkship Director Young Educator of the Year Award 2023, and Mayo Clinic Teaching Excellence Award 2024.

Fun fact: Dr. Rappaport loves soccer and spending time with his wife and three kids.

Andrej Urumov, M.D.

Andrej Urumov, M.D.

Dr. Urumov is an emergency medicine physician at Mayo Clinic where he serves as chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. He holds the academic title of assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.

Dr. Urumov earned his medical degree from Wayne State University in 2001, followed by an internship in internal medicine and a residency in emergency medicine at The George Washington University, completed in 2002 and 2005, respectively.

His professional and scholarly interests include emergency department operations, healthcare quality improvement, and patient safety. He has authored publications and delivered presentations on these subjects at national and international conferences.

Fun fact: Outside of work, Dr. Urumov enjoys hiking as a way to step away from the pace of the emergency department, recharge, and gain new perspectives on challenges both in and outside of medicine.

Connor O’Hare, M.D.

Connor O’Hare, M.D.

Dr. Connor O'Hare is an emergency medicine physician with a dedication to improving patient care through innovative research and quality improvement, focusing on acute pulmonary embolism management. He is a graduate from the Healthcare Administration Scholars Program and the University of Michigan, where he gained expertise in operations, advocacy, and leadership.

Dr. O'Hare's research focuses on enhancing patient outcomes in acute pulmonary embolism by refining risk stratification and reducing unnecessary hospitalizations. Dr. O'Hare's research has been published in leading journals, including JAMA Network Open, Thrombosis Research, and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and has been presented at many national venues.

Fun fact: Dr. O’Hare is a big coffee nerd.

Brigham Barzee, M.D.

Brigham Barzee, M.D.

Dr. Barzee is an emergency medicine physician with particular interests in resident education, diagnostic and procedural point-of-care ultrasound, emergency airway management, and resuscitation in cardiac arrest. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and engaging in multiple sports and outdoor activities, including tennis, basketball, swimming, and hiking.

Fun fact: Dr. Barzee is fluent in Korean.

Scott Calder, M.D.

Scott Calder, D.O.

Dr. Calder is an emergency medicine physician with a passion for medical education and wilderness medicine. Dr. Calder previously worked on ski patrol in Park City, Utah, and developed a strong interest in pre-hospital and austere care. He is currently pursuing fellowship training from the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. Additionally, he serves as the EMIG advisor for the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Arizona. Dr. Calder also contributes to the preparation of emergency medicine residents for oral board examinations. He has worked with AAEM to prepare residency graduates for their examinations.

Fun fact: Dr. Calder loves to cook, and he’s active and typically training for something ridiculous and competitive.

James Kelley, M.D.

James Kelley, M.D.

Dr. James Kelley is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and a consultant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. His expertise centers on medical education with decades of experience in both graduate and medical school education most recently as co-clerkship director of the Emergency Medicine rotation with the Alix School of Medicine's arrival to Mayo Clinic Arizona in 2017. He has a particular interest in medical simulation and ultrasound education.

Dr. Kelley is involved in numerous interdisciplinary clinical and academic groups within Mayo Clinic to include leadership as current staff president of the Officers and Councilors, a member of the Academy of Academic Excellence, Student Affairs Executive Committee and the Pediatric and Adolescent Subcommittee. Dr. Kelley was recently awarded the Teacher of the Year in 2025 by the graduating class of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.

Fun Fact: Dr. Kelley once worked as a cruise ship doctor.
