Our program seeks candidates from diverse backgrounds who are committed to advancing emergency medicine through clinical practice, education, and research — values that reflect the Mayo Clinic mission.
Qualifications
We encourage applicants with strong academic backgrounds who have demonstrated dedication to advancing the field of emergency medicine. To present a strong application, consider highlighting:
- Strong letters of recommendation that speak to your clinical skills, professionalism, and character
- A well-crafted personal statement that reflects your career goals, personal passions, and alignment with our program’s values
- Your commitment to innovation and advancing the field
- Your experience in teaching, research, advocacy, or leadership roles
We welcome applicants who are passionate about lifelong learning, dedicated to improving patient care, and excited to contribute to the future of our field. If these qualities resonate with you, we encourage you to apply.
Applicants typically apply to the Emergency Medicine Residency during their fourth year of medical school.

How to apply
The academic year begins July 1.
The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by Dec. 15 of the year preceding the appointment date.
You must apply through the Residency Centralized Application Service.
- Visit the ResidencyCAS website. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education programs must include these application materials.
- Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program. Candidates must register through the NRMP website in addition to applying through ResidencyCAS. Candidates who are eligible for admission outside the NRMP also are given consideration.
- Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty/residents. Interviews are conducted between October and January (concentrated primarily in November and December) each year.
While our program does preferentially review applications from those who have signaled, we also strongly consider applicants who do not signal us.
