Primary training site
Residents spend a significant portion of their training at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, a tertiary care academic medical center in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Residents care for patients with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions, including complex conditions requiring oncologic, hematologic, cardiovascular, neurologic, and transplant care.
Mayo Clinic in Arizona is a robust teaching environment, educating students from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and supporting numerous residency and fellowship programs. This multidisciplinary environment gives emergency medicine residents opportunities to learn alongside trainees and faculty across a broad range of specialties.
The Mayo Clinic emergency department has 62 dedicated patient care rooms, including three major medical resuscitation bays, and sees more than 62,000 patient visits annually. Residents gain experience across a broad range of acuity and complexity in a growing emergency department.
Mayo Clinic in Arizona is a nationally recognized Comprehensive Stroke Center and provides advanced cardiac care, including cardiac catheterization, left ventricular assist device management, and organ transplantation.
Participating clinical sites
To ensure a well-rounded clinical education, residents also rotate through several partnered healthcare institutions across Arizona:
- Phoenix Children’s Hospitals. Nationally recognized centers for pediatric care with a busy, Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and tertiary care pediatric referral center as well as community-based satellite pediatric hospitals and emergency departments.
- St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Located in central Phoenix, this busy Level 1 Trauma Center offers exceptional trauma and neuroemergency exposure.
- Valleywise Health Medical Center. A Level 1 Trauma Center and home to Arizona’s only burn center. Residents will also rotate in the Valleywise Health emergency department, caring for an underserved patient population in a busy, safety-net healthcare system.
- Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix. Residents gain valuable experience in medical toxicology, obstetrical, and emergency care for pregnant patients.
- Hu Hu Kam Memorial (Indian Health Services). Residents will rotate in a rural, low-resource setting to develop skills in rural emergency care and gain experience with a unique underserved population.
