Application Process
Positions
Four positions are available in the Gastroenterology Fellowship each year on a competitive basis.
Gastroenterology Fellowship Research Track
The Mayo Clinic Arizona Gastroenterology Fellowship will begin to offer the Research track for the 2026-2027 academic year (recruitment begins with the July 2025 ERAS application cycle). The distinguishing feature of this training track is that the second year of fellowship will be dedicated to research, with the fellow working in close collaboration with Mayo Arizona research faculty mentors in the fellow's identified area of interest. This includes world renowned faculty who are extramurally funded, are leaders of professional national organizations, serve on the editorial boards of acclaimed journals, and whose contributions have changed clinical management or offer novel therapies for the future. The opportunities for such expert mentorship are offered in many GI and liver subspecialties, including inflammatory bowel diseases, esophageal diseases, gastrointestinal motility, pancreatic diseases, cancer genomics, therapeutic endoscopy, and transplant hepatology. An additional benefit of the track is the opportunity to obtain a Post-Doctoral Certificate in Clinical and Translational Science through the Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCATS). The first and third years of the fellowship are a balance of clinical and outpatient endoscopy rotations similar to the conventional three-year fellowship track. This unique pathway will allow the fellow to obtain excellence not only in the clinical and endoscopic management of GI and liver diseases, but also provide a robust training in research methodology, dedicated mentorship, and extended protected time to conduct original research. Our research track's aim is to prepare the fellow for a career in academic gastroenterology or transplant hepatology.
Application for this track is through the General GI fellowship Selection process in ERAS. Highly motivated candidates with a track record in research, who are interested in the Research Track are requested to indicate their interest in their personal statement and during the interview process. Our fellowship recruits four GI fellows per year through ERAS; one out of the four fellows per year will be selected for match into the Research Track.
