Overview

The goal of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is to train the next generation of leaders in geriatric medicine. Our fellowship offers a robust curriculum of unique clinical and academic experiences across the care continuum.

Unique program opportunities:

  • A small, close-knit program with supportive faculty embedded in a world-class, large tertiary academic medical center that provides both primary care to a regional population and complex consultative care to patients from all over the world.
  • Unique mix of primary care-based and specialty-based geriatric clinical experiences, including:
    • Primary Care Geriatric Medicine Clinic
    • Consultative home-based geriatric assessment program
    • Longitudinal post-acute and long-term care experience encompassing work in skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care facilities
    • Consultative Acute Care Geriatrics (hospital-based consult service)
    • Broad array of subspecialty rotations including behavioral neurology, movement disorders, geriatric psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, wound care, geriatric cardiology, urogynecology, and more
    • Access to a long list of established clinical elective experiences, with the flexibility to add new ones based on your interests and educational goals
  • Community immersion with Geriatric Medicine Bootcamp (during 1st month of fellowship)
  • Individualized areas of concentration
  • Cutting-edge geroscience education from leaders in the field
  • Professional presentation curriculum, affording the opportunity for multiple internal and external presentations guided by expert mentors
  • Option for second year of Geriatric Medicine Research with the opportunity to earn a certificate or master's degree in clinical research, funded by Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education

Accreditation

The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Our fellowship program offers two pathways:

  • Path A: 12-month ACGME accredited clinical training program
  • Path B: 12-month ACGME accredited clinical training program path plus a 12-month non-ACGME accredited academic year

Fellows in good academic standing can apply for Path B during the first six months of clinical training. Fellows are eligible for Geriatric Certification Exam after the 12-month accredited clinical training program.

Certification

Fellows are eligible to take the certifying examination from American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Family Medicine. All graduates who have elected to take the board certification examination have passed.
