Research and teaching opportunities

Research opportunities

Your research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. You're encouraged to participate in research projects with the consulting staff. This includes opportunities for clinical studies and laboratory-based projects.

Extensive research opportunities and facilities are available through Mayo Clinic's Department of Radiology. You're assigned an adviser from the department, as determined by the fellowship committee. This assignment is based on your research interest. The adviser may be changed during the fellowship, at the option of the committee.

Individual research projects require advocacy and supervision by a staff member of the Department of Radiology (usually, but not always the adviser). In general, written plans for individual projects are submitted to the department research committee for assistance.

A program objective is that most research projects yield results that are suitable for presentation at scientific meetings and for publication in peer-reviewed literature. Research projects with the goal of submission for publication and presentation at the end of the fellowship are required.

Teaching opportunities

Your opportunities to teach include the following:

  • Present at three Emergency Radiology conferences (didactic and/or case-based presentation)
  • Monthly resident teaching sessions
  • Present in Emergency Radiology Journal Club conference

Call schedule

Your call schedule is different for each rotation. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

The call schedule includes a minimum of 10-12 weeks of weekend ER call shift participation. There are five different types of weekend call shifts for fellows to participate in.

While on call, staff is onsite and will guide fellows. Fellows will work as a team with residents and reading room assistants to level load the work.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is monitored carefully during the Hospital Emergency Radiology Fellowship. You are formally evaluated by supervising faculty members quarterly. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to confirm that your educational needs are being met.

Belonging

At Mayo Clinic, we foster an inclusive working environment and embrace the diversity of all our trainees, faculty, staff, and patients. Our Office of Belonging offers tremendous resources to support our mission of maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for all our employees, including our learners. From the program director

Ashish Khandelwal, M.B.B.S., M.D.Welcome to the Mayo Clinic Emergency Radiology Fellowship Program. This one-year fellowship is designed for radiologists seeking advanced training for a career in Emergency Radiology. Fellows are exposed to the full breadth and depth of Emergency and Trauma Radiology in a diverse patient population across varied environments. Clinical work focuses on the imaging of acutely ill and traumatized patients presenting to the Mayo Clinic Emergency Department and acutely ill in-patients.

Fellows will serve as integral members of the care team, guiding immediate management decisions through direct interaction with Emergency Medicine, the trauma team, and consulting specialists in various clinical divisions. Under the supervision of our dedicated Emergency Radiology faculty, fellows develop essential skills in optimizing imaging approach and workflow, managing a busy practice, and interpreting all imaging modalities across all organ systems. Our Division is deeply engaged in the national and international emergency radiology community, contributing significantly to research and education. Fellows share in evening and weekend coverage, with no full overnight shifts.

Electives in various Mayo Clinic radiology divisions can be arranged based on a fellow’s specific interests. Fellows have several opportunities to participate in teaching activities for Mayo Clinic medical students and radiology residents. When staff positions are available, qualified fellows are strongly considered to transition into attending roles within the Division of Emergency Radiology at the conclusion of the fellowship.
