Tropical Medicine Courses

These are full-length, two- to five-month courses that give in-depth coverage of disease and health care issues encountered in the tropics and majority world, especially in poverty settings.

Unless noted, successfully completing one of these courses allows you to sit for the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) examination leading to the Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers' Health. Information about the exam, including a full list of U.S.-based courses, can be found on the ASTMH website.

U.S. courses

The U.S. courses easiest to access are:

University of Minnesota Global Health Course

A mostly online course presented in affiliation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. The full ASTMH eligibility course for the CTropMed examinaton is seven online modules and two weeklong modules that need to be taken in person (total of nine modules). Individual online modules can be taken separately.

Location: Mostly online; in-person modules at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers' Health Course

This course includes four two-week modules that can be taken anytime and in any order.

Location: Mostly online; in-person modules at West Virgina University, Morgantown, West Virginia

Diploma Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health

This four-month program prepares health professionals with clinical backgrounds to deal with the important public health problems of tropical developing countries. It teaches physicians to define the epidemiologic, biologic and social aspects of tropical diseases and to evaluate and plan disease prevention and control programs.
