Overview

Under the sponsorship of Mayo Clinic, the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, is offered through Nemours Children's Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, at Wolfson Children's Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida.

Our provider team evaluates and treats a robust variety of pediatric patients, including those with acute life-threatening illness and injury, those with chronic and medically complex disease with technological dependence, and healthy children who require acute care in the emergency department setting.

As part of the largest pediatric radiology team in the country with the Nemours Children’s Radiology Department, we perform well over 400,000 studies nationally through an integrated multicampus radiology team, with which works together on research, education, quality, and safety, as well as exceptional clinical care across all subspecialties of pediatric radiology.

We are staffed by American Board of Radiology CAQ'd physicians who provide care 24/7, 365 days a year, with most having secondary fellowships in areas of pediatric radiology such as interventional radiology, neuroradiology, cardiac imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, and nuclear medicine.

The Radiology Department is additionally supported by dedicated radiology nurses, and advanced practice providers, radiology technologists, sonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and other expert team members to ensure optimal patient safety. Nemours Radiology Department has over 45 pediatric radiologists in addition to dedicated research Ph.D.s.

We provide a well-balanced pediatric radiology education within the fellowship program with exposure to all of the subspecialties and both elective and research time to provide for a complete experience and the beginning of a great career.

Accreditation, certification, program history

Accreditation

This program fulfills the training requirements as defined by the American Board of Radiology and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Certification

Graduates of the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, qualify to take the Pediatric Radiology subspecialty certification offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR administers a computer-based exam to ascertain the qualification of diagnostic radiologists who have studied pediatric radiology. A board-certified pediatric radiologist is one who has demonstrated knowledge, problem-solving, and application of those skills to a degree worthy of the public's and the profession's trust. This is someone deemed capable of working safely and effectively across various sectors of the field.

Program history

The Nemours Children’s Health Radiology Department began in 1991. The Pediatric Radiology Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, will have its first fellow in July 2026.

Positions

One position is available on a competitive basis each year in the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed an ACGME accredited four-year Diagnostic Radiology residency program to apply to the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship in Jacksonville, Florida. American Board of Radiology Alternate pathway (International Medical Graduates) will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. The academic year begins July 1.

Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education does not process printed applications to this program. You must apply through Recruit, a third-party application service. No matching program services are used.

Complete the following steps to apply:

  3. After submission, view the required Supplemental Items and Documents.
    • Upload each required item in the Supplemental Items section (if applicable).
    • Complete the Recommendation Request section (if applicable).

In addition to the standard application materials required by Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, this program requires:

  • Three original letters of recommendation. One letter must be from your residency program director. These must be completed in the Recommendation Request section. Each recommender will receive an email with a link to upload a letter.

Curriculum

Clinical training

Under the sponsorship of Mayo Clinic, our Pediatric Radiology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and located at Nemours Children’s Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida, is designed to provide an opportunity for clinical radiology and research training at the advanced fellowship level.

During the fellowship, you will work closely with staff consultants and have opportunities for involvement in current research programs or the formulation of original investigations.

Electives, didactic training, call frequency

Electives

You may also select a one-month elective at Wolfson Children's Hospital, any Mayo Clinic site, or Nemours Children's Clinic site. You may individually arrange for an elective rotation at another institution, pending approval of the program director. Nonclinical time for research, grand rounds presentations, and oral board preparation is distributed throughout the 12-month fellowship, averaging two to three days a month.

Didactic training

The Pediatric Radiology Fellowship experience centers on the reading room education. You are assigned to a faculty member each day for one-on-one learning with case-by-case feedback. Additional critical educational experiences include didactic lectures, participation in numerous multidisciplinary clinical conferences, visiting professorships, journal clubs, and research seminars. You are able to enhance your educational experience by teaching radiology residents, medical students, and rotating residents from other programs, both at the workstation and formal teaching conferences.

Call frequency

You will take overnight/weekend/holiday call as part of the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship.

Conferences

Weekly multidisciplinary conferences include clinical conferences in epilepsy, neuro-oncology, tumor board, neurolofy-neuroradiology, surgery-radiology, fetal anomalies and a weekly neuroscience Grand Round lecture series.

Research opportunities, teaching opportunities

Research opportunities

Mayo Clinic features world-renowned research resources. You are encouraged to participate in research projects with the consulting staff. This includes opportunities for clinical studies and laboratory-based projects. Dedicated research training is also available, including a lecture series in study design, manuscript preparation, biostatistics, etc. You are provided approximately four weeks of research time throughout the academic year, with the option of adding up to four weeks of additional research time during your elective rotation.

Teaching opportunities

You have the opportunity to teach radiology residents, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medical students, and visiting students from other medical schools through daily clinical work and formal didactic lectures. You will also have the opportunity to teach non-radiology faculty and trainees through numerous multidisciplinary conferences.

Moonlighting

You may moonlight with the program director’s approval. Moonlighting should not interfere with the required learning and must not violate the work-hour rules of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or visa regulations.

Mentorship, evaluation

Mentorship

You meet periodically with various faculty members, administrators, and the program director to discuss your career goals. Mayo Clinic and Nemours Children’s Health recruit many of its staff physicians from its own training programs, so when you successfully complete the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship, job opportunities may be available at one of the group practices.

Evaluation

To ensure you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is carefully monitored during the program. You are evaluated formally by the supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation, and you will meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you will also regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Department and faculty

The Nemours Radiology Department is a highly integrated, collaborative group of pediatric radiologists. All Nemours faculty hold academic appointments at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Each faculty member is committed to patient care, education, and research in their daily practice. All faculty members actively participate in resident and fellow training with predominantly one-on-one supervision. A considerable number of the faculty conduct clinical research, teach postgraduate and continuing education programs throughout the United States, and are leaders in radiology-related societies and communities.

The Department of Radiology performs over 400,000 cases annually, of which trainees participate in approximately 10,000. The Nemours Children's Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, partners with Wolfson Children's Hospital, which is part of the Baptist Health care system. Wolfson Children's Hospital is a modern, advanced pediatric facility that provides services in pediatric subspecialty areas, including cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, general pediatric, orthopedic, plastic, ENT, ophthalmology, and urology.

Advisers

The core faculty for our fellowship is invested in the professional development of our fellows. As a fellow, you will work with a core faculty member daily who will ensure your educational and professional development. Additionally, you will select a faculty member of your choosing who will serve to provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. Your adviser will serve as a point of contact, introducing you and your family to Jacksonville, Florida, Mayo Clinic, Nemours Children's Clinic, and Wolfsons Children's Hospital.

Wellness initiatives

As a trainee, your physical and mental health are priorities to Mayo Clinic and the department. Trainees have access to several resources to promote well-being, as well as time off clinical duties to attend appointments.

Fitness centers

Trainees exercising in a studioMayo Clinic residents or fellows can experience 24/7 free access to the Bill Hewitt Employee Wellness Center — opened in the summer of 2024 and spans 6,700 square feet with modern cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, a studio for live classes, and includes showers and locker rooms for convenience.

Additionally, residents or fellows at our three campuses get discounted membership fees to area gyms. In Jacksonville, Florida, residents and fellows can obtain an exclusive discount with the YMCA (several locations).

Groups on campus

Mayo Employee Resource Group (MERG) in Florida

Opportunities to join a variety of groups on campus provide regular social activities and can help enhance your training while connecting with a broad group of peers.

Trainees will have the opportunity to join a Mayo Employee Resource Group (MERG) at any time during their training program. Mayo Employee Resource Groups (MERGs) are employee-led affinity groups to promote belonging, increase cultural awareness, and foster an environment of respect and inclusivity. Any Mayo Clinic employee can join a group of interest and choose their level of involvement

Well-being

Cardiovascular diseases fellow works on a computer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.The Office of Academic Support and Well-Being provides resources to promote academic, emotional, social, cognitive, financial, and physical well-being. Career and academic services include academic advising, peer tutoring, and accommodations for learners with disabilities or health conditions. Mental health services, counseling, interview practice, and a variety of enrichment sessions on topics like budgeting, resiliency, and stress and burn-out are also available through the Academic Support and Well-Being office.

Mayo Fellows Association (MFA)

The Mayo Fellows Association (MFA) offers a peer and social support network for residents and fellows and their families with social events, athletics, and advocacy. The MFA also holds an annual resident and fellow appreciation event open to all trainees with complimentary massages, stress-reducing activities, and social support.
