Curriculum

A plastic surgery resident practicing a procedure in the simulation center.

Our curriculum and commitment to education in the Plastic Surgery Integrated Residency are unparalleled. Our residency offers a wide variety of clinical and hospital-based experiences and incorporated simulation center learning.

Rotations in the first year are designed to provide broad training in surgery and provide residents with a foundation in the science of surgery and the care of surgical patients. In the second and third years, residents complete clinical rotations on several surgical specialties that are closely related to plastic surgery, such as oculoplastic surgery, dermatology, otolaryngology, and transplantation.

The last three years encompass in-depth training in every aspect of the specialty, including aesthetic surgery, microsurgery, general reconstruction, complex pediatric and craniofacial surgery, gender affirmation surgery, and hand surgery.

Faculty research mentors are assigned to the residents at the beginning of their training, and residents are provided with the guidance, time, and resources necessary to engage in meaningful research. Dedicated research time is built into the third year of training to allow residents concentrated time to develop and produce quality research projects with the goal of peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and to develop connections with the greater plastic surgery academic community.

Mayo's high faculty-to-resident ratio, large patient population, and state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic, and research facilities combine to create a truly integrated, exceptional-quality educational experience. The "Mayo way" of graduate medical education ensures you have the finest teaching and the broadest patient care experience possible during a busy, hands-on residency program.

Call frequency

Your call schedule varies by rotation, but never exceeds every third night. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for resident work schedules.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is monitored carefully during the Plastic Surgery Integrated Residency. You are evaluated using plastic surgery milestones as well as other evaluation tools.

After each clinical rotation, you are formally evaluated by supervising faculty members and meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to confirm that your educational needs are being met.
