Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology (Florida)

Description

This clerkship utilizes the resources of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Students can select between a strictly outpatient or an inpatient rotation or a combination of the both. Students assigned to the Hematology/Oncology hospital service will function as a subintern. Senior internal medicine residents and Hematology/ Oncology fellows directly supervise and teach the students in the hospital service. Outpatient experience is supervised by the attending staff with the student participating in the evaluation of cancer and hematology patients.

Specific goals

  1. Become more familiar with hematologic diseases such as anemia, platelet and white cell disorders, and coagulation disorders.
  2. Become more experienced with the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases.
  3. Become more familiar with chemotherapy, including the practical aspects of its administration and management of toxicities.
  4. Broaden experience in the laboratory aspects of hematology.
  5. Assist and perform bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.

Activity outline

Students participate in the workup of hematology/oncology patients at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville under the supervision of hematology/oncology staff and fellows and senior residents. Students receive instruction in and assist with bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, as well as subcutaneous fat aspiration. Attendance to educational conferences at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is required.

Method of evaluation

An evaluation is made at the end of the clerkship based on the consensus of the staff that have been involved with the students during the clerkship. No formal examination is given.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
