Description

This clerkship provides a focused clinical experience in the evaluation and management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Learners participate in both inpatient consultations and outpatient specialty clinics, working closely with IBD faculty. Learners have opportunities to evaluate patients, develop assessment and management plans, and discuss cases with supervising physicians. Learners also gain exposure to endoscopic procedures and multidisciplinary care.

Specific goals

1. Gain exposure to the diagnosis and management of IBD, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
2. Improve history-taking and physical examination skills specific to patients with complex gastrointestinal and immune-mediated conditions
3. Develop an understanding of evidence-based medical therapies, including advanced therapies
4. Recognize and manage complications of IBD, including flares, strictures, fistulas, and extraintestinal manifestations
5. Understand the role of endoscopy, imaging, and pathology in the diagnosis and monitoring of IBD
6. Gain exposure to multidisciplinary care, including coordination with surgery, radiology, pathology, and nutrition

Activity outline

Learners participate in inpatient consult services, outpatient IBD clinics, or both under the supervision of IBD faculty. Didactic opportunities include divisional conferences, case-based discussions, and multidisciplinary conferences when available.

Learners may observe and/or participate in endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy and advanced therapeutic interventions, as appropriate. Learners may have opportunities to discuss complex cases, quality improvement, and evolving therapies in IBD care.

Method of evaluation

IBD faculty supervising the learner will provide ongoing feedback and evaluation of clinical performance. Due to the structure of the rotation and the limited duration of time spent with individual faculty, letters of recommendation will be provided at the discretion of individual supervising faculty.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete outside evaluations. Learners will receive an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to the learner and their school official upon completion of the clerkship.
