Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecologic Surgery (Florida)

Description

This subinternship is designed for the final year medical students who are seriously interested in pursuing a career in obstetrics and gynecology.

Students participate in preoperative evaluations and workups, intraoperative procedures, and the postoperative care of patients who present benign and neoplastic gynecologic surgical processes. Students are assigned to one of Mayo's staff gynecologic surgeons during the clerkship depending on availability in oncology, female pelvic medicine/reconstructive surgery, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

Specific goals

1Increase exposure to surgical gynecology by participating directly in one of several high-volume gynecologic surgical services. 2Become more familiar with the surgical management of cervical, endometrial, cervical, and ovarian cancers, as well as benign conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, endometriosis, and chronic pelvic pain.

Activity outline

On arrival, students become members of the surgical team and participate in morning rounds. On surgical days, students accompany residents and fellows to the operating suites and participate in the procedures scheduled for that day. On alternate days, students accompany staff surgeons during clinic consultations.

Method of evaluation

Evaluation is based on the student's level of participation and display of interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, teamwork, and patient care. Verbal feedback will be provided during a mid-evaluation meeting with the attending/consultant and written evaluation will be provided at the end of the rotation. Students will also be required to complete an oral presentation on a topic of their choice during the last week of the rotation, which will comprise a portion of their clinical evaluation.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.

Additional application requirement for Obstetrics/Gynecology

Each applicant must have USMLE Step 1 score; COMLEX cannot replace USMLE Step 1. A personal statement and letter of recommendation is also required. Of note, the Mayo Clinic Florida campus does not have an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program, and the faculty are not involved in the residency application process at the Rochester campus. Completion of a visiting rotation will not guarantee an interview offer at the Mayo Clinic Rochester OBGYN program during the residency application cycle.
