Palliative Care (Arizona)

Description

The student will be part of the inpatient interdisciplinary palliative medicine team. The Palliative Medicine rotation provides medical students with a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of palliative care within an inpatient setting. This rotation is designed to enhance students’ understanding of whole-person care by integrating physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial aspects of care for patients with serious illness.

Through direct patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and structured educational activities, students will develop foundational skills in communication, symptom management, and ethical decision-making. This elective is two to four weeks long and is held Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until work is completed.

Specific goals

  1. Develop foundational knowledge in the principles and practice of palliative medicine
  2. Build core skills in symptom management and communication with seriously ill patients and their families
  3. Gain experience working within an interdisciplinary team to deliver patient- and family-centered care
  4. Understand the role of palliative care in complex decision-making and care coordination across the healthcare continuum

Method of evaluation

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty, and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
