Description

This elective introduces students to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to common gastrointestinal (GI) and liver diseases in children and adolescents.

Specific goals

1. Conduct a diagnostic evaluation and initiate a treatment plan for children with gastrointestinal and liver diseases
2. Gain exposure to special diagnostic procedures in gastroenterology, such as endoscopic procedures, GI motility testing and liver biopsies

Activity outline

This rotation consists of a combination of time spent in both the pediatric GI outpatient and inpatient settings. Medical students are expected to:

1. Under the supervision of the consultant, see patients with gastrointestinal disorders
2. Follow patients and participate in hospital round presentations
3. Attend endoscopic procedures and follow liver and small bowel biopsies subsequent interpretation
4. Attend pediatric and pediatric GI conferences (please check with the GI consultant or pediatric GI fellows for conferences schedule during your rotation)

While rotating through the pediatric GI outpatient clinic, medical students are expected to:

1. Under the supervision of the consultant, rotate through the general and multisubspecialty GI clinic to see children with gastrointestinal disorders
2. Attend pediatric and adult GI conferences
3. Choose a common GI problem to review and present at the end of the rotation

Method of evaluation

• Medical students are evaluated by the consultant and supporting staff they work with using MedHub.
• The GI topic presentation is part of the evaluation.
• Medical students are able to evaluate the consultants and fellows they work with in MedHub.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
