Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Nephrology (Minnesota)

Description

For four weeks, the fourth-year medical student shadows a pediatric nephrologist or pediatric nephrology nurse practitioner on inpatient rounds and in the outpatient clinics. The student also is able to attend several conferences.

Specific goals

  1. Master the basic concepts of developmental renal physiology and understand the results of renal maturation on homeostasis
  2. Become familiar with the evaluation and initial management of children with renal problems or patients presenting with signs and symptoms that may be encountered in the practice of general pediatrics
  3. Gain familiarity with less common nephrologic problems that may be encountered in the practice of general pediatrics

Activity outline

Students participate in the workup of new and returning nephrology patients. They also attend appropriate nephrology and pediatric conferences where, on occasion, they present and discuss case histories. Students have access to textbooks and reprints in the pediatric library and the main medical library.

Method of evaluation

The staff nephrologists and the nurse practitioner observe and review student performance. Evaluations are completed through MedHub.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
