Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Arizona)

Description

Students work with members of Mayo's Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in an outpatient setting. Patients are evaluated by students and reviewed with a consultant. Appropriate diagnostic tests are ordered, and students are present for followup appointments. There also is an opportunity to learn the basics of ordering modalities and therapeutic exercise. Students may spend time with a physical or occupational therapist.

Specific goals

  1. Improve skill in directed neuromuscular and musculoskeletal examinations.
  2. Increase knowledge of rehabilitation principles in general and as they apply to specific diseases.
  3. Understand and be an active member of a rehabilitation team approach.
  4. Observe physical and occupational therapy treatment sessions.

Activity outline

Students evaluate two to four patients per day and are expected to attend the regularly scheduled PM&R conferences. In addition, students are encouraged to attend other regularly scheduled education programs at the Mayo Clinic campus in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Method of evaluation

The staff physiatrists review students' performance at the end of the elective, using the students' medical school evaluation forms

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
