Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent (Minnesota)
Description
You are assigned to the adolescent unit in the Generose Building at Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. This is a 16-bed co-educational unit for adolescents age 13 through 19. The average length of stay is three to four months. Diagnostic categories include depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders and adolescents with difficulty adjusting to physical illness.
Specific goals
- Learn about normal steps in adolescent development
- Develop the ability to assess deviance in adolescent development
- Learn about adolescent problems that warrant psychiatric attention and the types of interventions that are available and appropriate for common problems
- Become familiar with treatment planning on an inpatient adolescent psychiatry ward, including psychodynamic, behavioral, pharmacological, group and family approaches
- Develop comfort and skill in interviewing adolescents and their parents and assessing their mental status
- Learn what is therapeutic for an adolescent
Activity outline
Your responsibilities include the initial work-up and evaluation of newly admitted patients, primary therapeutic responsibility for two or three patients, and family assessment and therapeutic work for these primary patients. This work is done with collaboration and close supervision by a resident and consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry.
You also attend, participate in, and make presentations at the section's case conferences and seminars. In collaboration with the program director, you choose from the following experiences to round out the clerkship: child psychology assessment, outpatient evaluations, consultation or liaison service, or emergency room and emergency evaluations.
Method of evaluation
Evaluation is based on observation of the student's clinical performance.
Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
