Radiology, Interventional (Arizona)

Description

The main goals of the interventional radiology elective are to gain exposure to the various fields within interventional radiology and understand the role that interventional radiology plays in the diagnosis of disease and management of patients.

The students will be asked to select areas of subspecialty in radiology that they wish to participate in. These subspecialty areas include vascular and interventional radiology. The schedule is a four-week elective focused on one subspecialty. To maximize the learning of medical students, residents, and fellows, the approval will be subject to availability.

Students will be part of the imaging team, shadowing interventional radiology residents, fellows, and attendings as cases are reviewed and discussed in the interventional radiology reading rooms. Students with an interest in procedures will be invited to observe and potentially participate in biopsies and other interventional procedures.

The use of learning materials in the department library is strongly encouraged.

Specific goals

  1. Observe the workings of a busy clinical department and the role of interventional radiologists in the evaluation and treatment of patients
  2. Recognize the value and limitations of various imaging procedures
  3. Appreciate the consultative role of the interventional radiologist
  4. Observe the fundamentals of interventional radiologic diagnosis and therapy in clinical situations
  5. Observe and practice effective means of communication with referring providers and allied health staff

Activity outline

Students observe various areas in Mayo's Department of Interventional Radiology. Duties include tutorial teaching sessions with residents, attendance at departmental teaching conferences, and interaction with staff interventional radiologists, residents, and fellows in each area of the department.

Students are expected to engage in active learning by reviewing and studying introductory imaging textbooks. Books will be provided to students by the interventional radiology residency coordinator at the start of the elective period.

The online curriculum at DVL at SIRweb.com is focused on 50% ambulatory (outpatient) and 50% inpatient.

Method of evaluation

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty, and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
