Urology (Arizona)

Description

This clerkship takes place at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and Mayo Clinic Hospital. The entire spectrum of urological surgery, including endoscopic surgery, endourology, ESWL, major open surgery and GU prosthetic surgery for patients with benign and malignant diseases of the urinary tract can be seen.

Specific goals

  1. Gain a practical, working knowledge of urologic diseases, diagnostic workup and surgical treatments.
  2. Perform urethral catheterization and selected minor procedures.
  3. Observe and assist at surgery.

Activity outline

Students are involved in all aspects of patient care, from initial clinic evaluations through diagnostic workups, surgical treatment and postoperative care. Close supervision is provided by the urologic consultants. Students are expected to read about the pathophysiology and other aspects of the individual cases on the service and participate in ongoing educational discussions about those cases. On-call duty is not required.

Method of evaluation

Urologic consultants provide both written and oral student evaluations.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
