Urology (Minnesota)

Description

Students are assigned to a variety of urology services throughout their four-week elective. Students will have the opportunity to gain exposure to all urologic subspecialties. Students will spend their time in the clinic, operating rooms, and hospital settings with urology residents, fellows, and attending urologists.

Students are strongly encouraged to attend academic conferences, including:

  • Monday morning imaging and pathology conference
  • Thursday evening topic-oriented journal club
  • Bimonthly genitourinary multidisciplinary cancer conference

Specific goals

  1. Formulate an approach to and actively participate in the workup and management of patients with urologic disease
  2. Become familiar with approaches to the management of patients with hematuria, urinary calculi, urinary tract infection and urologic neoplasms
  3. Gain hands-on exposure to the breadth of operative approaches for urologic conditions

Activity outline

Students will work directly with urologic residents, fellows, and attending (consultant) urologists in the hospital, operating room, and clinical settings. They will gain hands-on experience through caring for hospitalized urologic patients, actively participating in operative cases, and evaluating patient in clinic. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to attend weekly conferences. Each visiting student will also give a short presentation on a Urology-based topic during their rotation.

There are additional opportunities for students to participate in simulation training programs through the Department of Urology as well.

Method of evaluation

Students will receive verbal and written feedback from residents, fellows, and attending urologists throughout their rotation. Feedback will be based on direct interactions with the students.

Per Mayo Clinic institutional policy, faculty and residents/fellows will not complete any outside evaluations. You will be provided with an electronic performance evaluation via Mayo Clinic’s MedHub portal. A final summative evaluation will be sent to you and your school official upon completion of your clerkship.
