Overview

After completing the 12-month PGY-2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital, you will be a proficient independent general practitioner capable of providing broad pharmacotherapy knowledge to pediatric patient populations.

The purpose of the PGY-2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital is to build on your Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY-1 experience and contribute to the development of neonatal and pediatric clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions and are eligible for board certification.

The PGY-2 Pediatric Pharmacy residency provides opportunities for general training in neonatal and pediatric areas of pharmacy practice. During each learning experience, residents work closely with their preceptors, highly qualified pharmacists, physicians, and other allied health care professionals.

Program highlights

  • Develop expertise, knowledge, and skills in a broad range of neonatal and pediatric therapeutics through direct patient care.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary health care teams by offering patient-specific interventions to optimize drug therapy outcomes.
  • Communicate essential drug information to the interdisciplinary team in an environment based on teamwork and mutual respect.
  • Enhance skills in conducting clinical research and quality improvement projects.
  • Strengthen communication skills by presenting formal and informal lectures (at the institutional and national level), writing a professional manuscript, and leading interdisciplinary topic and patient discussions.
  • Develop pharmacy practice management skills by contributing to various committees, establishing policies and procedures, and participation in medication safety activities.
  • Network with fellow pharmacy residents and other practicing health care providers through professional membership and conferences.
  • Lead didactic lecture on pharmaceutical topic(s) for the Mayo Clinic Physician Assistant Program

Program history

The PGY-2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital originated as a PGY-1 program with a pediatric focus in 2003 under the umbrella of Mayo's accredited general pharmacy practice residency. In 2011, the program was accredited as a freestanding residency by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Graduates practice across the U.S. as respected pediatric and neonatal pharmacy clinicians. The residency program is continuously evaluated for improvement opportunities to ensure graduates make a seamless transition into clinical practice. One candidate a year is selected on a competitive basis.

Facilities

Training for this residency is primarily conducted at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital, though students may have learning experiences at the Saint Marys campus (1,265 beds) or Methodist campus (794 beds), both part of Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester.
