Program-led Didactics and Conferences

Academic Half-Days: Twice-monthly Academic Half Days (AHD) that prioritize protected time for in-person learning and interactive content

Chief Conference: Weekly morning conferences covering high-yield education content taught by chief residents.

Health Equity Longitudinal Curriculum:  Our residency is committed to training physicians who are equipped to advance health equity and care for diverse populations. As part of this commitment, residents participate in one of four health equity pathways. Each pathway includes mentored experience and culminates in a project.

Resident Series: Longitudinal series hosted on important topics for residents including but not limited to: combined Pediatric/Emergency Medicine education, Ethics, Residents as Educators, Resident Support Series, and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion topics.

Town Hall: A monthly conference that brings together residents and residency leadership to share updates, discuss current issues, exchange feedback, and highlight ongoing quality improvement efforts within the residency.

VitalTalk Workshop: A fully protected, simulation-based workshop focused on building advanced communication skills for discussing patient values, goals, and care plans. Residents gain practical, evidence-based tools for navigating challenging conversations, strengthening patient trust, and supporting their own professional resilience.

Resident-led Didactics and Conferences

Diagnostic Reasoning Conferences: Twice-monthly resident-led diagnostic reasoning conferences open to department-wide attendance that focus on rich, multi-disciplinary case discussions (each resident presents once per year)

Baldwin Conferences: Weekly conferences open to department-wide attendance involving presentations by residents on educational topics of their choice (each resident presents once per year)

Procedural Based Learning

Mastery lab (Longitudinal simulation curriculum):  Quarterly sessions in the first year to improve individual simulated skill using a mastery learning model across all practice environments in pediatrics. Quarterly sessions in senior years to improve leadership skills within the multidisciplinary team in acute and ambulatory scenarios.

Simulation Center: The center offers simulated experiential learning via task training, virtual reality training, and high-fidelity scenarios using patient manikins, trained medical actors and a range of specialized medical simulation equipment.

Airway Lab: A unique, hands-on experience where residents practice pediatric airway management using high-fidelity mannequins and, optionally, live ferret models. This dedicated lab provides invaluable procedural training ensuring residents are well-prepared for real-life airway emergencies and neonatal airways.

Departmental Conferences

Systems-based Errors Conferences: Quarterly noon conferences open to department-wide attendance involving presentations by teams of residents on systems-based errors and quality improvement opportunities they have identified in clinical practice (each resident presents once during residency).

Grand Rounds: Weekly conferences open to department-wide attendance involving presentations by esteemed faculty from Mayo Clinic and beyond.
