Positions

The Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Residency offers 15 categorical pediatric positions each year:

• Thirteen traditional categorical pediatric positions
• One Prior Training Track position
• One Research Track position

Two additional pediatrics-child neurology positions are available at the PGY-1 and PGY-2 levels. All residents are part of the same residency community and receive comprehensive clinical training. 

Prior Training Track

One position is available for an applicant who has already completed significant prior training in general pediatrics and is eligible for a waiver of accredited training from the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). Eligible residents need to apply for the waiver of prior training from the ABP. As per ABP rules, all residents enter at first year level but eligible residents can advance to second year level after assessment confirms competence and readiness to progress.

This pathway allows experienced applicants to build on their prior training while completing the clinical experiences needed to become well-prepared, independent board eligible pediatricians in two instead of three years.

Research Track

One position is available for an applicant committed to a career that combines outstanding clinical care with research. Research pathway residents complete the program’s core pediatric clinical training while following an individualized curriculum that includes dedicated and fully funded scholarly time with focused mentorship, and access to Mayo Clinic’s extensive research and educational resources.

Residents do not need to match into the research pathway to participate in meaningful research or scholarship. Research mentorship and scholarly opportunities remain available to all pediatric residents.

Qualifications

U.S. and Canadian graduates: Open to graduates of accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools.

International medical graduates: Graduates of other medical schools must hold current Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification.

Visa sponsorship: Mayo Clinic supports multiple visa classifications for eligible residents and fellows, including H-1B, ECFMG J-1 and F-1 visas for residents and fellows. Other visa categories (e.g., O-1) may be considered at Mayo Clinic’s discretion and are not guaranteed.

How to apply

You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

1. Visit the ERAS website. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education programs must include these application materials.
2. Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must register through the NRMP website in addition to applying through ERAS. Rarely, a limited number of positions may be available at the PGY-2 or PGY-3 level.
3. Within our program description in ERAS, three separate selectable training options are available to choose from:
   • Pediatrics (our traditional categorical program): NRMP Program Code: 1328329C0
   • Pediatrics - Prior Training Track: NRMP Program Code: 1328329C3
   • Pediatrics - Research Track: NRMP Program Code: 1328329C2
4. Applicants can apply to one or multiple options when applying to our program. Applicants to all three pathways complete the same core application and interview process.
5. Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to interview at Mayo Clinic via the Thalamus platform and participate in a Zoom interview with the program director and selected faculty. Interviews will be conducted between October and December.

Each pathway has a separate NRMP program code, therefore applicants must rank each pathway. Applicants who wish to be considered for more than one pathway should include each corresponding program on their NRMP rank order list.

Our residency continues to participate in the NRMP’s Voluntary Program Rank Order List Lock Pilot, which allows programs to “lock” their rank lists and create a transparent window during which interviewees can attend an in-person second look visit or engage with residents or program leadership without concern that rankings will change afterward.
