Program description

The one-year Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, provides both the knowledge and necessary hands-on experience to pursue a career in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Along with lecture courses, the program provides applied learning through lab and clinical experiences at one of the best healthcare facilities in the world.

As a student, you will gain 900 clinical hours caring for patients, operating MRI equipment, and learning from experienced registered MRI technologists, radiologists, physicists, and other allied health professionals.

After successfully completing the program, you will receive a certificate of completion from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. Graduates are eligible to take the magnetic resonance imaging certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Students seeking a degree from one of the program’s affiliated academic institutions also receive a degree from their respective college university upon program completion.

Mission statement

The mission of the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences MRI Program is to provide premier didactic and clinical education that prepares graduates to excel as patient-centered technologists who are committed to safe MRI practices and delivering the highest quality imaging.

Goal 1: Students and graduates will demonstrate critical thinking.

  • Students and graduates will evaluate image quality.
  • Students and graduates will demonstrate the ability to make appropriate adjustments to obtain diagnostic images.

Goal 2: Students and graduates will demonstrate competency in clinical skills appropriate to an entry-level MRI technologist.

  • Students and graduates will demonstrate safe MRI practices for patients, staff and self.
  • Students and graduates will demonstrate clinical competence in producing diagnostic quality images.

Goal 3: Students and graduates will develop and apply skills in effective communication necessary for successful MRI practice.

  • Students and graduates will demonstrate effective verbal communication skills.
  • Students and graduates will demonstrate effective written communication skills.

Program effectiveness measures

MRI program effectiveness measures are provided in accordance with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) Accreditation Standards. Program effectiveness data includes program completion rate, American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) MRI credentialing exam pass rate, and job placement rate. This information is reported annually and may also be found on the JRCERT website.

The following is an overview of the program effectiveness data collected:

  • Students will complete the program.
  • Students will pass the national certification examination on the first attempt for examinations taken within six months of graduation.
  • Students will be employed in the MRI profession within twelve months of graduation.

Grievance policy

All students have the right to appeal administrative decisions made by faculty and staff of the MRI Program. The student must follow the levels as listed in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science grievance procedure.
