Overview

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, includes a group of more than 50 surgical, research, and clinical consultants. Our physicians work in an integrated and cooperative group practice that cares for more than 66,000 patients each year.

Orthopedic Surgery Residency (Minnesota): Program overview

Unique program highlights include:

  • Rotating in all subspecialty areas throughout your training in Orthopedic Surgery
  • Highly specialized training with expert physicians and surgeons who hold joint appointments in radiology, plastic surgery, infectious diseases, oncology, neurologic surgery, and pathology
  • Gradually assuming increased responsibility for patient care
  • Opportunity to serve as a team physician for one of the local high schools or junior colleges
  • A unique mentorship model that pairs you with a consultant surgeon for each rotation, working one-on-one with him or her for the duration of each rotation (typically 13 weeks)
  • Excellent research opportunities including the Master's Research Program, the Clinician-Investigator Training Program, and Clinical and Translational Research Training.

After completing the program, you'll have the experience to evaluate and treat most orthopedic conditions with confidence.

Program history

The Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Minnesota began in 1910. Since then, more than 1,000 physicians have completed our residency.
