A Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist in the operating room

Many of our graduates elect to return to their home states after their training. Therefore, it should be no surprise that we have 50 states represented among our alumni. We also recruit a fair number into our practices in Minnesota, Arizona, and Florida.

Our graduates are equally prepared to enter private practice and academics. Overall, approximately one-third of our graduates end up pursuing an academic career. Of those in private practice, many of them are leading their groups or hospital organizations.

Here’s what a few of our graduates have to say about their experience in the program.

What stood out during residency at Mayo Clinic was the balance between education and clinical experience. The variety of patient cases provided consistent exposure to complex situations, and the faculty were approachable and education oriented. There were also many opportunities for research and mentorship throughout training. Additionally, the senior hallway rotations were a unique part of the program, giving freedom to step into different cases and apply what I had learned, which built both confidence and independence while offering exposure to a wide variety of cases.

#1 Anesthesia Residency Program in the Nation? Absolutely! That’s exactly how I felt when I matched at Mayo Clinic in Rochester—and that feeling of pride and fulfillment has only deepened since completing my residency and joining the staff. My training was shaped by deeply committed, supportive clinicians delivering exceptional patient care, exposure to a remarkable range of complex cases across world-class facilities, and a collaborative learning environment that truly values mentorship and growth. Every day I’m reminded of how fortunate I was to be part of this program—and now, as a faculty member, I’m honored to witness new trainees carry forward this same spirit of confidence, excellence, and compassion."

Opportunities are endless at Mayo Clinic is what I tell all aspiring applicants. What stood out most during my training was the unparalleled quality of education and the direct mentorship from true leaders in the field, many of whom are or have been presidents or leaders of national societies and prominent voices in academic anesthesiology. The program provided exceptional clinical training while also supporting my interests in research and professional development, with ample opportunities to contribute to projects that shaped national conversations in the specialty. It was a deeply inspiring place to grow, in clinical practice, research, and leadership.

Dedication. What makes this program special is its dedication to success. The needs of the patients always come first at Mayo. And through that vision, you can feel throughout all years of residency, that the staff and mentors are there for you and your future. Whether it be crushing the in-training-exams or trying to find a private practice job on either coast or wanting to become a future president of a major society, I always felt that the staff here were constantly trying to pull all of us residents upwards — much further than we thought we’d be going. I can only thank this program and my mentors for my successes now.

I most valued two things about Mayo Anesthesia residency: A resident family and subconsultant hallway rotations throughout the vast majority of third year. I learned so much from my hallway senior rotations, which allowed me to freely participate in any number of cases, as I wasn’t tied to the geographic constraints of being an in-room (one OR) anesthesia provider.

I left Mayo with the confidence that I could perform anesthesia for just about any case out there. From a practice standpoint, I was incredibly prepared to take on even the most challenging cases. The professional atmosphere at Mayo taught me how to treat people appropriately, both patients and co-workers. Watching how our leaders at Mayo interacted with us on a daily basis, the respect and dignity they treated us with, inspired me to always treat people the same way.

Fellowship opportunities

Although it varies from year to year, approximately one-half to two-thirds of our graduates pursue fellowship training. We offer fellowship opportunities in all the ACGME accredited fellowships and many non-ACGME accredited fellowships. Each fellowship director is a leader in his or her field of subspecialty and dedicated to the advancement of their field and engagement of young scientists and leaders.

At Mayo Clinic, we offer fellowships in critical care, pain management, cardiothoracic anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, regional anesthesia, and obstetrical anesthesia. See a full list of fellowships.

We have also supported graduates who sought non-traditional specialties such as in education, transfusion medicine, statistics, and simulation training. Our goal is to create the best anesthesiologists in every field and Mayo Clinic excels at fostering a community, foundation, and culture to enhance this endeavor.
