Mayo Clinic dermatology resident in Minnesota talking to a patient

Positions

There are eight positions available on a competitive basis each year in the Dermatology Residency:

  • Five advanced clinical positions. PGY-2 through PGY-4.
  • Two categorical positions. These are automatically linked to a transitional year in internal medicine at Mayo Clinic. Residents do not need to interview separately for this transitional year.
  • One Research and Innovation Track position. This four-year program (after PGY-1) offers one additional year of training to prepare residents who are interested in pursuing a career in research or innovation.

If you are applying for the Research and Innovation Track position, email us at mayo.derm@mayo.edu to notify us of your interest. We will email you supplemental material relevant to the Research and Innovation Track position before an interview date, so we can tailor your interview time. Use this subject line: Interest in Research and Innovation Track.

Qualifications

Before starting the Dermatology Residency, participants must complete one year of clinically based training at Mayo Clinic or another Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved U.S. academic institution. This year may include clinical training in an internal medicine or pediatrics program.

To fulfill this requirement, Mayo Clinic offers:

How to apply

You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by Sept. 29, 2023, for the July 2025 PGY-2 start. We will be participating in the Nov. 6, 2023, interview release date. Virtual interviews will be half days on the following dates — Dec. 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, and 18, 2023.

Applicants do not need to apply separately to the Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency to be eligible. There are, however, three separate codes to use when completing applications in ERAS.

You may apply to the advanced positions (PGY-2) and the categorical positions (PGY-1), as well as the Research and Innovation Track, provided you have a real interest in pursuing this option. Only serious applicants for this position will be ranked. Also, simultaneously apply for an Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency position to cover yourself if you match to the PGY-2 program.

  1. To apply to the program, visit the ERAS website. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education programs must include these application materials.

This residency requires that one of your three letters of recommendation be from a dermatologist with whom you have worked.

  2. All appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates must register through the NRMP website.
  3. Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to visit Mayo Clinic for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty. Interviews are conducted in December and January each year.
