Research and scholarly activity are integral to the Internal Medicine Residency. Our program provides the infrastructure, mentorship, and funding to support residents in developing research skills, conducting independent investigations, and achieving national recognition for scholarly work.

Starting in PGY-1, residents are paired with a research mentor whose expertise aligns with their individual interests and goals. Mentorship is a cornerstone of our research program, connecting residents with faculty who guide scholarly development and career planning. Four weeks of protected research time are integrated throughout the intern year, allowing residents to begin their research projects early and establish strong mentorship relationships. Residents also have the opportunity to pursue four additional weeks of dedicated research time during PGY-2 and PGY-3, providing flexibility to deepen investigations, complete manuscripts, and build scholarly portfolios aligned with fellowship and career goals. 

Clinician Investigator Training Program

Mayo Clinic is dedicated to advancing patient care through basic, clinical, and translational research, and provides world-class clinical and research education. The Clinician Investigator Training Program is a two-year integrated experience designed for residents and fellows who aspire to combine research with a robust clinical practice. Our Residents are eligible to apply after completing their PGY-1 year, and the program includes six months of dedicated research time during residency, followed by a fellowship position at Mayo Clinic.

Research and scholarly support

Mayo Clinic in Arizona residents are very successful in producing peer-reviewed publications and presenting at national and regional meetings. The program provides generous support for national and international conference attendance:

• Ten paid conference days per year (separate from vacation)
• $2,550 annual funding per resident to cover travel costs, registration fees, and housing
• Abstract submission support
