The Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Arizona offers 17 categorical Internal Medicine residency positions each year through a competitive selection process.

How to apply

You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

The application form and all supporting documentation must be submitted by Dec. 15 of the year preceding the appointment date. The academic year begins in June.

1. To apply to the program, visit the ERAS website. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education programs must include these application materials.
2. Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program. Candidates must register through the NRMP website in addition to applying through ERAS.
3. Applicants selected for interview will be notified through a Thalamus invitation. Applicants are able to review available dates and self-schedule directly in Thalamus. Interviews are scheduled between October and January each year. Interviews are conducted virtually and are scheduled as half-day sessions. Our program aligns with the AAIM Recommendations for Internal Medicine Residency Recruitment to ensure an equitable process for all applicants.

Application review

Applications are reviewed holistically, including the Medical School Performance Evaluation, United States Medical Licensing Examination scores, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and the experiences and accomplishments detailed in the ERAS application.

Available results of the USMLE Step 2 CK exam are required to be considered for an interview.

Post-interviews

Optional in-person second-look visits are offered each year in late January and early February. Attendance will not impact an applicant's position on our rank order list, which is submitted and certified in NRMP prior to the visit. For the 2027 match cycle, our program is participating in the NRMP Voluntary Program Rank Order List Lock Pilot.

In compliance with the NRMP match code of conduct for programs, we limit post-interview communication to answering clarifying questions about the program. We are not able to arrange personal tours or individual in-person meetings with program leadership after interview day.
