Humanities in Medicine
At Mayo Clinic, your wellness is our priority. We focus much of our attention on building wellness and resiliency initiatives into our curriculum to help reduce the risk of physician burnout for our trainees, allowing them to provide the best possible care for their patients.
The Mayo Clinic Center for Humanities in Medicine supports Mayo’s primary value — the needs of the patient come first — by integrating the arts and other expressions of human culture into the healing environment.
The center’s programs, educational activities, and research in the medical humanities serve patients, families, employees, learners, and the larger community. Music, dance, and theatrical performances, visual art exhibitions, bedside arts programs, and lectures all contribute to the healing environment.
Humanities in Medicine for the Physician are monthly seminars for residents and fellows involving analysis, reflection, and participation in a wide variety of medical humanities activities. These include:
- Narrative medicine
- Literary arts
- Music
- Visual arts
- Medical improvisation
- Dance and movement
- Healing gardens
- Visiting museums and art exhibitions
Educational programs provided by the center promote the development of well-rounded health care professionals who are aware of Mayo’s unique heritage, understand the benefit of a culturally rich healing environment, and are trained in the art of medicine as an essential professional asset.
Awards and recognition we’ve received include:
- American Medical Association Steps Forward Program. The Internal Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic in Florida is featured on the AMA’s website Steps Forward — a site that’s dedicated to wellness.
