Positions

Three funded positions are available on a competitive basis each year in the Physician Scientist Research Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the Physician Scientist Research Fellowship program, you must have a doctoral degree with a strong interest in research. You must be accepted into or currently enrolled in one of Mayo Clinic's laboratory medicine or pathology clinical training programs. How to Apply

There are two main pathways to apply for the Physician Scientist Research Fellowship (PSRF):

1. Through the Mayo Clinic (Rochester) Pathology Residency Match
2. After acceptance into the Mayo Clinic (Rochester) Pathology Residency or a Mayo Clinic (Rochester) Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Clinical Fellowship Program

Applying Through the Mayo Clinic Pathology Residency Match

Applicants must submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Additional information about the Pathology Residency application process is available on the residency program website.

The Mayo Clinic Pathology Residency participates in the Unified Residency Program Interview Offer Initial Release Date for Pathology. For the 2028 Match, interview invitations will be released no earlier than October 15, 2027. Match results are announced on March 15 at 10:00 a.m. EDT, and residency training begins on July 1.

Those applying to the PSRF should choose one or more of the following residency tracks and can also apply to any of these tracks without pairing the track with the PSRF:

• Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP)
• Anatomic and Neuropathology (AP/NP)
• Anatomic Pathology (AP-only)
• Clinical Pathology (CP-only)

Following completion of residency training, trainees in the PSRF transition into a two-year, fully funded research fellowship at Mayo Clinic. During clinical training, a PSRF-track resident meets regularly with PSRF program leadership to develop research plans.  During clinical training, the PSRF-track resident will identify a research mentor and develop a research plan. Research mentors must be Mayo Clinic Rochester faculty with active extramural research funding; they may hold appointments in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology or another relevant department.

Applying After Acceptance into a Mayo Clinic Pathology Residency or Clinical Fellowship Program

Individuals who have been accepted into a Mayo Clinic (Rochester) Pathology Residency or Mayo Clinic (Rochester) Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Clinical Fellowship Program may apply to the Physician Scientist Research Fellowship. Application materials should be submitted electronically to the PSRF Education Program Coordinator at any time after acceptance into the clinical training program and, at the latest (earlier applications are encouraged), by October 31 of the academic year preceding the intended PSRF start date.

Required Application Materials

• Completed PSR Fellowship Application Form
• Personal statement describing your interest in the PSRF (500-word maximum)
• One-page summary outlining the Specific Aims of the proposed research
• Curriculum vitae (CV) and bibliography
• Letter of support from the proposed research mentor, including confirmation of availability of suitable laboratory space and research support (fellow salary support is provided by the PSRF)
• NIH Biosketch for the proposed research mentor
