Overview

The Medical Psychology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is a multi-specialty program with three American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited postdoctoral programs.

The fellowship's postdoctoral programs are designed for recent graduates of an APA- or Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)-accredited clinical or counseling psychology doctoral program and an APA- or CPA-accredited predoctoral psychology internship who desire advanced training in one of the three specialty practice programs offered in this fellowship:

  • Clinical Child Psychology
  • Clinical Health Psychology
  • Clinical Neuropsychology (adult and pediatric specialty tracks)

These three accredited fellowship tracks are designed to complement your background and to provide more focused and in-depth training in your chosen substantive specialty practice area. The specialty tracks constituting the fellowship are each two years in duration, with one or two postdoctoral candidates recruited each year for each of the specialties.

The fellowship prepares doctoral-level psychologists for a career in an academic medical center by offering clinical training integrated with research and educational opportunities in the scientist-practitioner tradition of training in psychology.

The integration of psychology into a large academic medical center that provides the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education, and research is the hallmark of this program.

Accreditation

The Medical Psychology Fellowship has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 2005. The fellowship has three accredited postdoctoral specialty practice programs: Clinical Child Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology, and Clinical Neuropsychology (adult or pediatric). The next APA accreditation review is scheduled for 2029.

Program outcomes

Mayo Clinic Medical Psychology Fellowship Program aims include advanced specialty competence in clinical practice, specialty competence in research and scholarship, and specialty competence in consultation and inter-professional skills. Over the past five years, the post-fellowship employment rate has been 95 percent. Graduates are employed in a range of clinical and academic settings across the country.

Program history

The Medical Psychology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic began in 1986. Since that time, more than 85 fellows have completed their training in the fellowship and its specialty postdoctoral programs. We anticipate three or four trainees across the three specialties will complete this program annually.
