Distinguished Educator Award Recipients

Congratulations to our 2024 Educators who were recently awarded the Distinguished Educator Award. This award recognizes senior Mayo Clinic faculty who have demonstrated long-term excellence, leadership and an unusually high level of commitment to learners in educational activities. Award recipients are recognized for their ability to challenge and inspire their students and colleagues. Distinguished Educator Award recipients are nominated by their peers; however, consistent recognition by students for outstanding teaching is also a critical factor in the selection process. Nominees are reviewed by a selection committee of Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science.

Call for Conveners

Education & Technology Forum
Registration is now open for the virtual, synchronous 2025 Education and Technology Forum (ETF) event, held on Wednesday, February 12th, 5-7 p.m. CT. This year’s theme is Cultivating Digital Fluency: Flourishing as Educators of the Future.

The ETF planning committee is also seeking volunteers to serve as conveners during the event. As a convener, you will assist with facilitating activities (e.g., small group discussion) during the event and help participants learn new education and technology skills. Training will be held mid-January to fully prepare you to be a convener. We will also have resources available to ensure your success as a convener in the virtual environment. Conveners play a critical role of the program’s success and serving as a convener contributes toward education skill development hours (criteria 1) for membership within the Academy.

Please message Kassandra Poffenberger by Monday, December 23rd, 2024 if you would be interested in serving as a virtual convener this year.

Call for Abstracts

1. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | No Deadline
MedEdPORTAL invites potential authors to submit their educational innovations that support the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical education for publication consideration. The rapid advancement of AI is transforming how physicians are trained. Given the promise of AI tools, educators and institutions must be prepared to both responsibly and ethically implement them for the purpose of teaching and learning, and to prepare clinicians to effectively use evolving technologies in their clinical practice. Collection editors, Cornelius James, MD and Elissa Hall, EdD, designed this call to highlight the work of educators, learners, and staff who are driving the role of AI education towards the aim of improved patient care.

2. CALL FOR INNOVATION | Virtual Reality and Simulation-based Education
The Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center is seeking input on ways to revolutionize simulation-based education by incorporating virtual reality, education science and artificial intelligence into simulation course offerings. Submit your ideas to Diana Kelm, MD, to work collaboratively on this hot topic in medical education.

3. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | Deadline January 17, 2025
The Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) National Grant Award Committee is now accepting pre-proposals for the 2025 GEA National Educational Research Grant Award that address important problems or questions in medical education.

Proposals that foster collaboration are strongly encouraged. This includes collaborations among GEA sections (UME, GME, CPD), across GEA regions (CGEA, NEGEA, SGEA, WGEA) and/or proposals that engage multiple schools, professions, or departments. Multiple projects may be funded each year up to $10,000 each up to a two-year grant period. The number of proposals funded per year will depend upon the GEA budget and proposal quality.

Mentors Sought for 2025 Clinical Research Internship Summer Program

The Mayo Clinic Office of Nonclinical Education Programs (ONCEP) is pleased to announce the call for applications to serve as a mentor for the 2025 Clinical Research Internship Summer Program (CRISP). This summer’s program runs from May 27th through August 1st, 2025, and student applications are already open. The CRISP program is a 10-week internship in which undergraduate or recently graduated students are paired with Mayo Clinic faculty to engage with and contribute towards their clinical research. Students commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week during this time. This is a mutually enriching relationship, and many student alumni go on to pursue additional training or careers at Mayo Clinic.

The CRISP program began at Mayo Clinic in Florida more than 15 years ago and has grown to include over 80 students each summer. We are anticipating our inaugural cohort in Rochester for 2025 to have 30 students.

Requirements for serving as a CRISP Mentor include:

  1. Academic appointment of Instructor or higher.
  2. Ability to provide student with designated workspace within one’s work area.
  3. Expectation to meet with student 1:1 at least once per week during 10-week program.
  4. An existing or proposed research project, which may range from case reports, chart reviews, epidemiological studies to prospective trials.
  5. Attendance at mentor orientation to be scheduled in the Spring 2025.

If you are interested in participating, please submit the CRISP 2025 Mentor Application online. We anticipate notification of accepted applications and student/faculty pairing to be announced sometime in February 2025. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Michael Boniface or the FLACRISP inbox.
