The primary objective of the class is to enhance medical students’ ability to communicate with Spanish speaking patients so that they can build a better relationship with their patients and put them more at ease in the provider-patient role.
The Distinction in Medical Spanish is a formalized path for medical students with advanced to Native Spanish proficiency to become bilingual English-Spanish physicians. This distinction track seeks to advance MCASOM’s efforts to develop physicians capable of providing quality, patient-centered care to diverse patient populations and help reduce health disparities by increasing the number of Spanish-speaking physicians in the U.S.
Medical Spanish for Beginners is a longitudinal selective that gives students an opportunity to learn the basics of Spanish with a focus on communicating and connecting with Spanish-speaking patients in a clinical setting. This selective, designed for students with little or no prior experience with the language.
Students participate in a course that trains medical professionals, military, and first responders in limited resource medical care. Curriculum delivered will be a combination of didactic presentations, case presentations, hands-on skills stations, simulations, and Procedural Skills Lab activities.

Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (MPET) is a field that melds discovery of basic biological mechanisms with translation of those findings into understanding the molecular basis for disease and the discovery/development of novel therapies for human disease.
The Neighborhood Christian Clinic is a faith-based healthcare organization that provides care to uninsured patients in Phoenix, AZ. This selective provides the clerkship/post-clerkship phase student the opportunity to develop their ability to evaluate and manage acute and chronic illnesses seen in the primary care setting. Students will be encouraged to use a holistic approach to promote healthy lifestyles.
Students are assigned to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Saint Mary's Hospital and take part in the activities of the service. If students have an interest in NICU follow-up clinic, they can attend an afternoon with one of the Neonatology Fellows.
Students will shadow staff neonatologists during their daily routine at the neonatal intensive care unit at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, providing exposure to working with newborns and infants requiring intensive care.
This selective will provide exposure to all aspects of nephrology through participation in patient care and rounds. The student will observe initial evaluation and follow-up care of nephrology patients on the inpatient consult service and nephrology clinic.
