Students will shadow ophthalmologists and observe care of patients with ophthalmologic disorders, both in the Mayo Eye Clinic and in the private offices in the greater Phoenix area, as well as be able to observe ophthalmology surgeries in the Mayo Clinic Hospital OR.
The selective occurs in the outpatient clinic setting where the students will rotate through each of the subspecialty clinics including cornea, glaucoma, neuroophthalmology, oculoplastics, retina, and strabismus.
Designed to give students an appreciation for the role of ophthalmology as a medical specialty and an opportunity for them to become more accomplished, confident and capable when presented with a patient with ocular complaints. The course content encompasses clinical ophthalmology.
The oral health selective gives students the unique opportunity to learn oral health screening and assessment skills while working with local, underserved populations in Phoenix.
The orthopedic surgery selective is designed to introduce students to the field of orthopedic surgery while building fundamental skills that are essential to a future career in orthopedics. The selective will consist of one week of shadowing, lectures, and hands-on skill labs.
Students will have the opportunity to observe different approaches to the surgical aspects of orthopedics as a specialty. Students will gain exposure and experience in the operating room. Providing the student with an understanding of the treatment of a variety of orthopedic conditions.
The student will have an opportunity to do basic orthopedic splinting, casting, and non-operative management of fracture problems, and will participate as a member of the orthopedic service team with the residents and faculty members.
Students will join the Orthopedic Surgery team specializing in foot and ankle, gaining exposure to the medical and surgical management of patients with acute injuries and chronic conditions affecting the foot and ankle and lower extremity in the perioperative setting.
Students will gain exposure to the approach to the medical and surgical management of patients with acute injuries and chronic conditions affecting the hand and elbow through shadowing experiences with the Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity team.
Students will join the Orthopedic Sports Medicine team and learn more about the diagnosis and treatment of a large variety of sports injuries. The experience will encompass the entire spectrum of sports related musculoskeletal injuries.
