There are a variety of cardiovascular and primary care clinics in the community that provides compassionate care to the homeless and underserved population in Northeast Florida including Sulzbacher Center, Volunteers in Medicine, Mission House, and others. This longitudinal rotation provides an opportunity for the medical student to have an indispensable role in helping to provide that medical care.
Students observe Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting at the hospital and the clinic. Students will review patient cases with the RDN prior to observing consults, either in an outpatient office setting or bedside clinical teaching. Additional activities such as observing group classes, team meetings and interdisciplinary rounds, as well as completion of a case study, are also available.
Obstetrics and gynecology combine the disciplines of medicine and surgery. As such, this selective provides exposure to broad practices within the field of medicine as well as an understanding of the complexities within women’s health care.
Students will work with several staff consultants, fellows and residents in various oncologic disciplines at the Mayo cancer center and hospital, gaining exposure to various tumor specific clinics, subspecialty tumor boards, journal clubs and teaching sessions.
A self-directed online Pathology course using pathelective.com. Students will self-select the pathology learning modules of their interest to complete and read short Microbiology articles.
Over the course of 2 months, students will attend a single workshop session, read pre-selected material on various ophthalmology topics, and shadow consultants for a total of 20 hours.
Offering students an opportunity to become more accomplished, confident and capable when presented with a patient with ocular complaints. Students will shadow various consulting staff both in the clinic observing patients and, in the OR, observing surgeries.
Students will shadow ophthalmologists and observe care of patients with ophthalmologic disorders, both in the Mayo Eye Clinic and in the private offices in the greater Phoenix area, as well as be able to observe ophthalmology surgeries in the Mayo Clinic Hospital OR.
Designed to give students an appreciation for the role of ophthalmology as a medical specialty and an opportunity for them to become more accomplished, confident and capable when presented with a patient with ocular complaints. The course content encompasses clinical ophthalmology.
The oral health selective gives students the unique opportunity to learn oral health screening and assessment skills while working with local, underserved populations in Phoenix.
