Dermatology has so many wonderful aspects to it. There is an opportunity to take care of all types of patients – some with acute conditions and others with chronic conditions where you can see the patients for years to help them manage their illness. As a Hispanic woman, I am excited to meet the needs of people with different skin colors and just giving back to my community that has given me so much.

I could not have asked for a better training program than the one I had at Mayo Clinic. I think the unique environment where medicine and research blends so seamlessly has helped make discoveries and innovation possible. For instance, for my Ph.D. thesis project, I collaborated with hematologists to access patient samples to validate my basic science research findings.
Somaira Nowsheen, M.D., Ph.D.
Named the first recipient of the Mayo Clinic M.D.-Ph.D. Program Director Achievement Award for her research contributions while in the program
