The power of discovery

I’m driven to explore how science can create better solutions for patients. From my early experiments to my current work in regenerative medicine, I’ve been fascinated by the power of discovery to make a difference. I’ve seen firsthand how innovative therapies can improve lives, and that experience solidified my desire to contribute more directly to advancing cutting-edge biotherapeutics. It’s this sense of possibility that keeps me excited about what’s next.

Pursuing a Ph.D. allows me to deepen my skills, tackle complex challenges, and help push new treatments from the lab into the real world where they can have an impact on human health. I chose Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences because it uniquely combines world-class research with a renowned clinical institution, creating an environment where cutting-edge discoveries can influence patient care. In my Ph.D. research in the lab of Clifford Folmes, Ph.D., I am addressing a critical challenge in stem cell therapy. My studies are exploring how conditions of oxygen and metabolite supply in tissues may influence the quality and survival of stem cells used as therapy. The information may help create better stem cell treatments for conditions like heart disease.

"Mayo Clinic’s collaborative culture and emphasis on team science have enhanced the scope of my project and provided new perspectives I hadn’t previously considered."

A culture of collaboration

Mayo Clinic’s collaborative culture, access to state-of-the-art resources, and emphasis on team science have been truly inspiring. Being able to connect with experts in metabolic research, tissue engineering, and translational medicine has enhanced the scope of my project and provided new perspectives that I hadn’t previously considered.
In addition, Mayo Clinic’s three campuses across the country and student-focused culture have been instrumental in my growth as I prepare for my future career. The three sites mean that students have access to diverse expertise, cutting-edge technologies, biotech innovation, and academic and industry connections. Events like the annual graduate school symposium – where students from all campuses gather in Rochester to present their research in progress – foster connections and inspire exchanges across disciplines.

A challenging and rewarding journey

Pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences is a challenging and deeply rewarding journey and choosing the right program can make all the difference. My advice for prospective students is to follow your curiosity and think about how your passion for science can have an impact. A Ph.D. is a journey of discovery, not just in research but also in yourself. My graduate training has helped me grow as both a scientist and a future innovator in biotherapeutics. Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has provided an incredible platform to help me succeed.
