Find a Mentor

Choosing a mentor is one of the most important steps in your graduate journey. Your mentor, also known as an adviser or principal investigator, will guide and support you through the research portion of your program, offering valuable insight drawn from their deep experience in basic, translational and/or clinical research.

Mentors are expected to meet with you regularly to help navigate challenges, help shape your research proposal, oversee and track your progress, and provide thoughtful guidance as you complete your research.

In addition to helping you shape your thesis proposal and form your Thesis/Program Dissertation Advisory Committee, your mentor also serves as a trusted resource for academic, professional, and personal development. Only faculty members who have been granted full faculty or master’s-level privileges may serve in this role.

The Ph.D. program offers flexibility, allowing students to choose any Mayo mentor and join their research team, regardless of chosen track or direction. Use the tool below to find faculty who are eligible to host students in their labs. Additional mentors may be available—please consult your program director. You need to select a mentor within six months of starting your program.
