Spotlight on student research: Improving regenerative treatment to heal bones
April 25, 2022Growing up as a student athlete in Cincinnati, Joe Panos had more than his fair share of visits to the orthopedist for sports injuries. Now Panos, an M.D.-Ph.D. student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, is hoping to become an orthopedic surgeon. As part of his education, he is conducting research to improve regenerative treatment for patients whose bones don't heal properly.

January 21, 2022Fourth-year medical student Jennifer Talbott knows a thing or two about human trafficking. Her father is the director of advocacy at the Human Rights Center at the University in Dayton, Ohio. After Talbott enrolled at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine on the Arizona campus, she became curious about how victims of trafficking interact with the medical community. Her curiosity led to research, and research led to enhancing the medical school’s curriculum.

Pathway programs bridge the gap for underrepresented students in health care
January 10, 2022Mayo Clinic is making it possible for people from underrepresented communities to pursue careers in medicine, research and science, technology, engineering, and math, often referred to as STEM, through a number of programs. The Office for Education Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has designed 24 pathway programs for students from diverse backgrounds to explore and prepare for clinical and nonclinical health care careers.

Former firefighter turned medical student keeps focus on family, career
August 9, 2021The term "fourth-year medical student" feels like a misnomer for Nicolas Rubel, who finished his final year at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Florida. The reason? The former firefighter and paramedic has two other roles that he says are even more important than medicine. Nick is a husband and father of two. He recognizes that he's considered a nontraditional student, and the 36-year-old has ambitious goals for his career, but it can't come at the expense of his family.
