Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology Inpatient (Florida)

Students attend rounds with the gastroenterology consultants. They have the opportunity to work up new admissions, see inpatient GI consultations, and participate in procedures. The flexibility of this clerkship allows students to observe outpatient procedures and consultations also. Time is available to attend rounds on the inpatient nutrition consulting service. GI consultants directly supervise students, which provides a unique opportunity for a one-on-one teaching experience.

Specific goals

  1. Gain exposure to gastroenterology, hepatology and clinical nutrition.
  2. Present cases and formulate a differential diagnosis.
  3. Gain experience in the workup and management of patients with various gastrointestinal diseases.

Activity outline

Students attend rounds daily with consultants and, on appropriate days, with the nutrition consulting service. They admit patients, see new consultations, and follow them directly with the GI consultant. If time permits, afternoons may be spent with outpatient procedures and consultations. Students are urged to attend regular conferences in GI and other specialties that are held frequently at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

Method of evaluation

Consultants who supervise students provide performance evaluations.
